Because Playa del Carmen has maintained its status as a small fishing town all the activities are found along the few-miles long strip that runs along the city known as Quinta Avenida, or 5th Avenue. It is located within one block from the beach, runs parallel to the beach, so just follow the walkway! Despite it being small, there is an assortment of specialty shops, restaurants, bars, rentals, inns, convenience stores, boutiques and hotels. Among the many interesting things one can purchase in Playa are hammocks, lamps made of coconuts, hand-made straw hats, hand-made wooden sculptures, original paintings and even stylish clothing.

During the day it is quiet and peaceful but at night, Playa’s 5th Avenue really comes to life. The nights here can be passionate, energetic, and filled with laughter and good times. And how can it not? For when you’re here, one can really enjoy life to its fullest and there’s not time or space for negative feelings. Being in Playa at night is almost like being at a carnival. It’s so amazing to see fire-breathers, giant snakes and live exotic animals up close right on the street! Walking from one place to another you can encounter an array of artists anything from painters to musicians to dancers and even actors. Something you have to enjoy is the music of “duos” and “trios”, who come to your table while dining at a restaurant or can simply be found on a sidewalk. They’re known for singing some of the most romantic songs in the Spanish language.
