It is located one block from the principal public square of the city, it is one of the most beautiful temples in Oaxaca.
The temple was constructed by the Order of St. Agustine, who where during that time in charge of the education of the indigenous population of Oaxaca. The temple itself was begun during the 16th Century, and was finished and consecrated as a temple that very same century. However, the original temple was very simple, and the temple as it appears today was finished in 1722.
The convent next to it, was no longer used for religious activities by the middle of the 18th Century, and was used as an institute for Art and Science. Years later, a Bishop adquired the building, and converted it to a hospice for orphans, which is what is used for today.
St. Augustine Temple
The façade of the temple is Baroque style, and a sculpture of St. Agustine is carved on the façade. Inside, some of the remains of St. Augustine are supposed to be kept.
