This temple is located six blocks from the Cathedral, but the walk is truly worth the sight! This is a World Heritage site, proclaimed by the UN at the end of the 20th century.
The temple was dedicated to the Virgin of Soledad, who is considered the patroness of the city of Oaxaca. Legend has it that a man and his donkey were passing through this zone, and while the man pulled his donkey the donkey dropped to the ground as if overwhelmed by the weight of his cargo. After noticing that the donkey was unable to stand, the man went and sought for help. When the villagers came to help the man’s donkey, they were perplexed as to what could have the donkey have been carrying to have overburdened him. They begin to go through the cargo and they discovered that the mule was carrying the image of the Virgin Mary. They took this to be a divine message and the temple was built on the spot the donkey had fallen unto the ground.
