This is a beautiful temple, with a red dome that sharply contrasts with the stone colored cut quarry of the temple. This temple used to have two towers, but they fell down during an earthquake in the 20th century and they were never replaced. It is built after the “Baroque” style, and with what is used to be its convent, the place used to form a very large complex and was known as “Casa Fuerte” or the strong house.
In the 18th century the Jesuits were expelled from Mexico by the Mexican government and the temple and the convent were taken over by the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, an order of nuns. When the Jesuits were finally allowed to return, they could only recover part of the temple and the convent, the remaining parts had been taken over by the government. The convent had 4 patios, the Jesuits were only able to take back one patio, while the other three the government took them. Today those three patios are being used as a Movie Theater and commerce.
