This is a beautiful space that is currently used as a high school by the University of Morelia. Its façade is made of stone and has many windows with black railings, making the building look even older. You will feel the warm student atmosphere as you enter.
The interior style is named baroque.
In the center of the two-story building is a square patio with many plants and a sculpture dedicated to studious students.
Each story is adorned with stone arches and in some walls have wonderful murals adorning them. On a side of the second floor, you have a view of the murals and in the distance, the cathedral’s towers. It’s beautiful scenery for a picture.
As beautiful as its construction is, its history is quite interesting. St. Nicholas College was created in the 16th century by Vasco de Quiroga, in Patzcuaro, a town on the outskirts of Morelia.
The University
Its intended purpose was as a Catholic seminary school, that was used to teach Christianity to the region's natives.
Shortly thereafter, the Seminary school was moved to the city of Morelia, to this building, and it immediately became one of the best schools.
This was where Miguel Hidalgo studied. He was one of the leaders of the movement for Mexico’s War of Independence from Spain. He was a Catholic Priest. The school was shutdown by Spain in 1810, and it was not re-opened until the middle of the 19th century by a politician named Melchor Ocampo. On the second floor there is a room dedicated to Melchor Ocampo. Incredibly, his heart is kept as a relic.
This is a place that for its beauty and history is worthy of a visit.
