Santa Rosa is the name of this temple. The building next to it used to be both a convent run by Dominican nuns, and a girl’s school. Both buildings are from the 18th century.
In the 1940’s, the convent was converted into a music conservatory.
Music classes were taught there and many concerts were performed by a well known choir named "The Child Singers of Morelia".
The temples façade is made in the baroque style.
The interior has beautiful red wooden altarpieces. There are two entrances to the temple. It is said that one entrance was for people going to mass and the other for the women who were going to become nuns. Once a woman entered the convent, she was not allowed to leave the convent for the rest of her life. The nuns heard mass behind a wall so that they would not be seen by the people of the town.
I highly recommend visiting the interior of the ex-convent
Rose Temple
It has both a garden and a pretty fountain in one of its patios. If you observe the fountain you can see the image of a dog, which has a legend. It is said that when religious classes were given to girls, a young woman who became widowed entered the convent and brought her beloved dog. The dog was fierce towards men, but playful with women. In those times, the girls and young ladies were able to go out to the patio area and were observed by the young men. On one occasion, a man fell in love with a young lady and sent her a love letter. He was rejected by the girl, which hurt his pride and caused him to break into the convent. As the man and his friends broke into the convent, the dog attacked them and instantly killed the man. In retaliation, his friends killed the dog. The next day, the nuns and girls in the religious school buried the dog with distinction for defending them from the men. Later on, the fountain was decorated with the dog’s image to remember their friend.
You will appreciate this tranquil place.
