This place was previously a very big plaza, however when the construction of the cathedral began at the end of the 17th century, this plaza was divided leaving behind two plazas in its place, the "Plaza de Armas" and this plaza: "Plaza Melchor Ocampo".

This plaza was previously named "Plaza San Juan de Dios", this was due to the fact that the closest building to it was a hospital with the same name. However the name was changed to honor a famous politician who took part in the Reform movement in Mexico.

Its a nice place to sit around and enjoy an afternoon.
