ibrary

When I arrived here I didn't imagine it was a library because from the outside it looks like a temple, which was the original use of the building. Its construction began in the 17th century by a religious group named Jesus' Company.

It was not until 1930 that the University of Michoacán used the building as a library. It is made with limestone in baroque style.

It has two towers and a lovely garden, in which a fountain and a sculpture dedicated to a famous person born in the city is located. It is worthwhile to enter. The books are arranged in 2 story high shelves made with fine wood. There are over 22,000 books in this library, of which many are over 500 years old. The library is very much appreciated by the locals. Local painters sell their paintings in the garden.

Morelia's Library

The paintings are very nice and have reasonable prices. Behind the library, the regions candy and artisans market is situated. Here one can enjoy local candies of Morelia, such as “ates.” An “ate” is a quince jelly candy. It is made with a variety of fruit juices and sugar. I recommend you try them, they aren’t expensive and you will be delighted by its delicious taste.
