This is an enormous statue located on one of the cites hills. It’s dedicated to Juan Jose Martinez, nicknamed “El Pipila”. Before I tell the significance of this statue, I will let you know that this site has the best panoramic views of the city.

Day or night, one can appreciate the most important buildings; the Basilica, the university, Hidalgo Market, and many more.

To get to this site, I recommend taking a nice half hour walk from the center of the city so you can enjoy the cities famous alleys. Another fun option of getting to the monument is taking a cable car from the Juarez Theatre and you will arrive in just minutes. History tells that “El Pipila” was a miner that lit the wooden door on fire of the “Alhondiga de Granaditas” where the Spanish army was located.

The statue of Pipila

He did this with a torch in hand while covering his back from attacks with a paving stone. As the door was burning, the Mexicans were able to enter and fight the Spanish. This incident occurred during Mexico’s War of Independence in 1810. Next to the statue, there are many stores that sell Mexicans crafts and souvenirs. You can also find food vendors selling Mexican goodies that will be difficult to resist. One delicious dish is a dough filled with meat, cheese and beans or cactus. A local delicacy is a quesadilla filled with pumpkin flower. This flower has a delicate taste and is obtained from large Pumpkins.
