If you’re interested in shopping for arts and crafts, sampling traditional dishes or buying souvenirs from Guanajuato, I recommend visiting this market. Tours usually take you to other markets where the prices are much higher than those of “Mercado Hidalgo”.
Upon arrival you’ll find a very colorful place, with many different colored flowers, sweet breads and indigenous crafts.
It’s a beautiful building, comprised of a metal clock tower with four dials and an arch of green quarry stone as its main entrance. It was inaugurated on September 16, 1910 as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s War of Independence.
Hidalgo Market
In the first story of this two story building, candies, fruits, vegetables and Mexican fast food are sold. The second has a wide array of indigenous crafts.
I recommend trying the “Charamuscas,” a typical candy from Guanajuato which is a caramel candy filled with such things a nuts or raisins. Another interesting candy are the Sugar mommies. They are melted sugar in the form of mommies fitted with Mexican clothing, an excellent souvenir for your friends.
