lhondiga

It is a very important building in Mexico’s history. Its construction began towards the end of the 18th century. Due to the floods that frequently struck the city, the building was initially used as a warehouse for grains. Afterward, the Spanish military used it as a refuge.

Shortly after the start of Mexico’s War of Independence, lead by Father Miguel Hidalgo, the Mexicans were able to enter the building, thanks to a feat by a man nicknamed “ Pipila”.

Dragging himself, while with a big stone on his back for protection, he was able to burn down the door with a torch. This occurred on September 28th, 1810. The building has been used as a warehouse, refuge, jail and now it is a museum.

The Alhondiga is now a museum

It’s a very worthwhile visit due to its lovely interior, made of green quarry stone, and the many historical artifacts related with Mexico’s War of Independence. At one point, the heads of four leaders of the war where placed in cages at each of the buildings corners as a lesson to Mexicans. You can learn all this and much more in the museum tour.
