It is a very important building in Mexico’s history. Its construction began towards the end of the 18th century. Due to the floods that frequently struck the city, the building was initially used as a warehouse for grains. Afterward, the Spanish military used it as a refuge.
Shortly after the start of Mexico’s War of Independence, lead by Father Miguel Hidalgo, the Mexicans were able to enter the building, thanks to a feat by a man nicknamed “ Pipila”.
Dragging himself, while with a big stone on his back for protection, he was able to burn down the door with a torch. This occurred on September 28th, 1810. The building has been used as a warehouse, refuge, jail and now it is a museum.
The Alhondiga is now a museum
