This plaza was previously a country estate. Its name is in honor to Ignacio Allende, one of the key participants of Mexico’s War of Independence.
You have probably heard of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel, “Don Quixote.” Well, this plaza has a sculpture that pays tribute to Don Quixote.
On your next trip to Guanajuato, you mustn’t miss a picture next to the sculpture of Don Quijote mounted on his horse and next to his faithful squirre, Sancho Panza. The sculpture was made in the 70’s, when the Cervantino Festival became international.

Another of the plaza’s attraction is the Cervantes Theatre. It is 2 stories high and has a capacity of 430 people. Its entrance is through the center of the plaza and its façade, made entirely stone, blends well with the plaza. The theatre, as well as the plaza, are used to stage plays during International Cervantino Festival.
